Why Do Gardeners Need Insurance?

While insurance for gardeners can seem like a big-business luxury, it’s imperative for keeping your gardening business thriving. With this protection in place, you can focus on what you love—transforming gardens and landscapes—while knowing you’re covered against the industry’s biggest risks.

If a prized bird bath breaks

General Liability coverage ensures it can be replaced, good as new!

If a client gets injured by falling debris

Ouch. Let us handle the medical expenses for accidents on the job.

If you fail to meet client expectations

Lawsuits can be pricey; we’ll cover the defense costs.

If your favorite trowel is stolen

Not “Old Rusty”! 😩 We’ll replace your equipment (but you’ll need to make new memories).

If a fire destroys your warehouse

Don’t despair—we’ll handle the damages.

How Much Does Gardening Insurance Cost?

Gardening insurance with Insurance Canopy starts at just $31 a month, offering tailored coverage to fit your business. Want to know what impacts your premium? We break it down so you can choose the best protection with confidence.

With our quick, 100% online application, you can get a personalized quote in under 5 minutes. It’s simple and stress-free!

Save when you choose annual!

Save up to 12% with an annual gardening insurance policy! Even with seasonal work, an annual plan ensures year-round protection, hassle-free renewals, and peace of mind — making it a smart, cost-effective choice for your business.

What Does Gardening Business Insurance Cover?

From stolen gardening tools to data leaks, our policy inclusions have been informed by gardening professionals just like you!

Included

General Liability Coverage

Property damage and third-party bodily injury claims are the most common in the gardening industry. General liability policies cover all of these scenarios and more. For instance, if a client or passerby is injured by a loose garden tool while you’re pruning bushes, or if a stray pebble from your trimmer accidentally cracks a nearby window, general liability insurance can help cover medical expenses and legal costs associated with the incident. However, it’s important to note that this coverage does not extend to injuries sustained by you or your employees—it only covers your clients and third parties.

Additional Insureds

Adding additional insureds is all about giving extra protection to your clients or landlords, so they feel safe and secure knowing they’re covered under your policy. For example, if your crew accidentally damages a client’s property while mowing the lawn or applying fertilizers, the additional insured is protected under your coverage.

This not only builds trust but also shows that you’ve got everyone’s back, making your business relationships rock-solid.

Add-Ons

Cyber Liability Coverage

Gathering emails for digital marketing? Housing client addresses online? If you use digital means to conduct any part of your gardening business, Cyber Liability coverage can help you with:

  • Data Breach Notification Costs
  • Customer Data Loss
  • Ransomware and Cyber Extortion
  • Legal Fees
  • Business Interruption Fees

Gardening Surety Bonds

Surety bonds are essential for gardeners, as they protect operations and build client trust. This bond involves three main parties: the gardening contractor (that’s you!), the client, and the surety company, which guarantees that you will meet your contract obligations.

While not universally required, many regions mandate surety bonds for legal gardening work and public construction projects.

Having a surety bond gives clients the confidence to invest. After securing your gardening insurance policy, you can easily add a bond through your customer dashboard.

Types of bonds we offer:

  • Business Service Bonds
  • License & Permit Bonds
  • Contractor Bonds
  • Custom Pesticide Applicator

Tools and Equipment Coverage

Tools and equipment coverage, also known as inland marine, is here to save your blade (and your business). This insurance protects your essential gear—from extra-tough gloves to wheelbarrows—against theft, damage, and mysterious mishaps. So, whether it’s a runaway spade or pocketed pruning shears, rest easy knowing your prized garden gadgets are covered.

Workers Compensation Coverage (Coming Soon!)

Ever thought about what happens if your best gardener slips and falls on the job? Workers compensation for gardening businesses is an insurance policy that covers medical expenses and lost wages if your employees get injured while making lawns pristine.

Commercial Auto Coverage (Coming Soon!)

Imagine your trusty work truck getting sidelined by a fender bender—ouch! That’s where commercial auto coverage for lawn care services comes in. It covers everything from accidents to repairs, keeping your operation rolling smoothly. Whether it’s the ride hauling your fertilizer or the van transporting your team, this insurance ensures you’re back on the road in no time.

Get notified when Commercial Auto is available in your state!

What’s Not Covered by Gardening Insurance?

Gardening insurance ineligible/excluded operations include:

  • Tree removal: If it’s lumberjack work, it’s out of our league.
  • Tree trimming conducted other than from the ground up (without using walls, ladders, roofs, scaffolding, hoisting equipment, etc.): Keep your feet on the ground, and we’re all good.
  • Designing operations or playing landscape architect: We’re all for creativity, just not on this policy!
  • Irrigation or sprinkler installation (only incidental damage repair allowed): We love a good sprinkle, but no full-blown waterworks here!
  • Hardscaping: Paving the way? Not on our policy.
Have a unique situation you’re afraid won’t be covered? Chat with us about the specifics and we’ll see what we can do!

I’m Sold! But What Policy Do I Choose?

Unsure which gardening insurance policy best fits you? Consider the scope of your operations (aka, what a day on the job looks like) and daily risk factors (aka, what could land you in hot water). Find what best describes your business:

New & Growing Businesses

We describe new gardening businesses as those with minimal client interactions and low-risk environments. If you offer a singular service—such as planting, seeding, fertilizing, etc.—and interact with only a handful of customers per season, you may fall into this category.

Growing businesses have more frequent client interactions and moderate risk exposure. You could be juggling additional services such as landscaping designs, pest control, or tree care, but not necessarily need a large safety net quite yet.

Start strong with a General Liability Insurance Policy. At this level, we recommend our package with a coverage rate of $500,000 per incident / $1,000,000 per year — ideal for covering basic risks.

Established Business

Established gardening businesses have significant client interactions and higher risk exposure. If you have a backlog of flowers to plant and are a well-known biz in your neighborhood, the likelihood of running into trouble at some point is likely. As you expand your clientele or services, this risk also increases—so you’ll want to know what your policy can deliver.

Insurance Canopy’s elevated General Liability Insurance package offers coverage of $1,000,000 per incident / $2,000,000 so you can keep growing in confidence. And don’t forget to add Workers’ Compensation insurance to the mix to protect your employees in case of work-related injuries. It’s a smart move to keep your team safe and your business running smoothly.

Please note: we’re in the business of small businesses, so our coverage is only available for businesses with payroll under $200K and annual revenue under $1.5M.

Tools and Equipment Insurance

This one’s a must-have for gardening businesses. Your tools and equipment are what keep those gardens and your business booming. Without proper coverage, unexpected damages or theft could leave you scrambling and disrupt your service commitments, potentially costing you clients and revenue. Our packages include:

  • $1,000 per incident / $3,000 per policy year (+$3.33/month): Adequate for new businesses with limited equipment.
  • $2,000 per incident / $6,000 per policy year (+$4.58/month): Suitable for growing businesses with a moderate amount of equipment.
  • $5,000 per incident / $10,000 per policy year (+$5.00/month): Best for established businesses with significant investments in tools and equipment.
If you’re still unsure, don’t sweat it. Our expert team can help match you with a policy that fits both your needs and your budget.
