Anyone who makes their own products can benefit from having handcrafted product insurance. It’s the safest way to sell your creations without putting your business in jeopardy.
Most of the items you can buy at the store are likely covered by liability insurance. If someone is hurt by a product, or it damages someone’s property, then the business who makes the product can be held responsible. This could mean paying for medical bills, legal fees, or repair costs.
We offer speciality General & Product Liability Insurance for most handcrafted products. The most popular products we insure are:
Growing your business and protecting your products has never been easier! The Handcrafted Soap & Cosmetics Guild (HSCG) and Indie Business Network (IBN) are the best member-only communities packed with support, business advice, conferences, insurance opportunities, and more.

Yes, you must be an HSCG or IBN member in order to purchase these specific policies. While we do offer our own handmade product insurance, it is a little pricier and has more exclusions.
We worked directly with our carrier to create specialized policies that are exclusively available to HSCG and IBN members. They include additional coverages and a more flexible premium, so being a member does have its perks!
The following products and ingredients are excluded from our coverage. Please note this is not an all inclusive list of exclusions within the policy. It is important that you refer to your policy documents for exact coverages offered.
If you need product liability insurance coverage for any of the excluded products listed above, please contact us and we will do our best to help you.
Yes, most limits can be increased. We know some fairs, shows, and wholesale buyers require you to have specific liability coverage limits in order to meet their contractual insurance requirements.
Details about specific limits and prices can be found below.
General & Product Liability – You can increase your General & Product Liability Aggregate Limit from $1 million to $2 million for $55 a year. You can easily select this increase during the application process or through your online portal after a policy has been purchased.
Excess Liability – If you need higher liability limits than what can be purchased by you online, we can provide up to $5 million in additional liability limits. It will cost $500 for every million dollars of additional limits needed. For example, if you need an additional $2 million in liability coverage, it will cost $1,000 a year. To do this, you will need to contact a member of our team.
Professional Liability – If you teach, instruct, or facilitate classes or workshops as part of your business operations, you can add professional liability coverage to your policy. This coverage helps you pay for injuries and damage claims arising from, and in connection with, you acting as a teacher, instructor, or facilitator. You can add this coverage to a policy online at any time for $135 a year.
Tools, Supplies, & Inventory Insurance – (Inland Marine Insurance) This coverage can insure the tools, supplies, and inventory you use in your business for claims of theft or damages. It can also insure the property of others that is in your care, custody, or control, anywhere in the United States. The limits available through the HSCG program are:
If you need higher additional limits for any coverage on your policy, please contact us to discuss your options.
Yes, it is free to add an additional insured to your policy. There is no limit to the number of additional insureds you can add, so you can add as many as you need without any extra cost to you.
It’s important to note that an additional insured is an entity such as an event, a venue, a landlord, a retailer, or an event organizer. It is not for friends, family, or other crafters.
In most cases, yes you are covered if you sell wholesale. The one nuance here is you must be handcrafting most of your wholesale orders. If you contract another business to produce your product and ship it out to retailers, you cannot be covered. You also can’t be engaging in any excluded activities or wholesaling ineligible products.
You have to remember this is “handcrafted” insurance, so it’s intended to insure handcrafted products. You might buy organic cotton hand towels in bulk, but then you hand-dye and customize them. This could be covered! You also might have a trusted friend or family member helping you make large batches of your handmade face cream. This could be covered too.
