Do I Want a Tutoring Platform or a Tutoring Marketplace?

Online tutoring jobs fall into two business models: tutor platforms and tutor marketplaces. Don’t apply for an online tutoring job until you understand the difference!

In the hundreds of tutor reviews and Reddit threads we read for this article, many tutors were frustrated that their platform wasn’t a marketplace (or vice versa). Finding the best remote tutoring jobs for you means focusing on the business model with the right level of support, oversight, and independence.

Tutoring Platforms Tutoring Marketplaces
Structured curriculum (pre-made materials or in-house tutoring guidelines)
Freedom to teach in your own style and create your own lessons
More consistent schedule
More flexible schedule
Platform handles marketing and often matches you with students
Building a student base is time-consuming (self-marketing required)
Platform sets pay
Tutors set their own pay
Best for: Beginning tutors
Best for: Experienced tutors

10 Best Online Tutoring Jobs from Home: Pros & Cons

We targeted the 10 most talked-about tutoring platforms and marketplaces this year, but how does each benefit tutors (or not)? Let’s evaluate the pros and cons based on tutor reviews.

Indeed platform screenshot of Wyzant

Working for Wyzant: 3.9/5⭐ Indeed Wyzant Tutor Reviews

Overview: Known for its network of 65,000+ tutors, 300+ subjects, and user-friendly interface, Wyzant is one of the largest and most popular tutoring marketplaces in 2025. Tutors book sessions by creating a profile, viewing job posts, and responding to the sessions they want. Students who view your profile can also request a lesson by sending you a message.

Pay: The national average pay for a Wyzant tutor is $26.85/hour.

Qualifications: Wyzant doesn’t require any certifications or degrees to create a tutoring profile. You just need to be based in the U.S. and have a Social Security number.

How to apply to Wyzant:

  • Apply through the Wyzant Tutor Sign-Up page
  • Give your name and contact information to create an account
  • Select your subjects and list your experience, degrees, licenses, educational history, etc.
  • Provide a mailing address, hourly rate, and travel radius for in-person sessions
  • Personalize your profile
  • Wait for registration approval (typically three to 10 business days)
Pros
  • Flexible scheduling. Set your hours and apply to open jobs or reply to session requests. There’s no obligation to accept jobs.
  • Set your own prices. Tutors charge from $13.55 to about $40+/hour with no price caps.
  • High average pay. Established tutors can set fairly high rates relative to the industry.
  • Extensive subject range. 300+ subjects, including higher-paying options like advanced math, engineering, and test prep.
  • In-person tutoring options. Wyzant is one of only two companies on our list that offers in-person scheduling options.
  • 25% commission fee. Wyzant keeps a quarter of your hourly rate, so plan prices accordingly.
  • Profile visibility. Negative feedback or not following company policies can get your profile hidden or removed.
  • Problems with scam accounts. Reviews report messages from scam accounts, and that Wyzant lacks vetting for student profiles.
  • Fast-paced and competitive. Students only see the first five applications to their posts, so tutors need to be quick and proactive.
  • Getting your first students can be tough. Wyzant tutors report trying for a few days to a few months. Getting students is much easier after your first positive reviews.

Best for: Entrepreneurial tutors willing to market themselves; in-person and online sessions

Indeed platform screenshot of Preply

Working for Preply: 3.6/5 ⭐ Indeed Preply Tutor Reviews

Overview: Preply is a Ukraine-based tutoring marketplace known for language tutoring. It offers 120+ topics and 800,000+ students from over 180 countries. Preply tutors create profiles to showcase their experience and availability (plus special topics like business English or travel French). Students search profiles and pick their best fit.

Pay: Preply internal data puts the average at $18.30/hour. One Preply tutor recommends $15 to $25/hour to stay competitive while making teaching worth the effort.

Qualifications: The key to getting approved is deep knowledge of your language(s). Most subjects don’t require certifications, degrees, or teaching experience, but you need a teaching certificate or diploma for a few advanced areas.

How to Apply to Preply:

  • Visit the Become a Preply Tutor page
  • Sign up by creating a tutor profile, complete with your name and contact info, a professional profile photo, an introduction video, your payment info, and your schedule
  • Allow five business days for profile approval
Pros
  • Set your own rates. Tutors can choose their price based on experience and qualifications, and they can increase their rates over time.

  • Flexible scheduling. No penalty for tutors who cancel or reschedule at least 12 hours in advance. Students who cancel less than 12 hours in advance will still be charged.

  • Good for beginning tutors. Few requirements mean anyone can apply for their native language.

  • Low tech skill requirements. All you need is a laptop, microphone, webcam, and a stable internet connection. Preply Classroom has an easy video interface and gets good reviews.

  • Required, unpaid demos. Every student’s first lesson is free, and you are not compensated.

  • Significant competition. A large number of experienced tutors makes it tough to stand out to students, especially for popular languages like English.

  • 18–33% commission. Preply takes 100% of your demo lesson with each student, then 33% from their future lessons. Tutors who stick with Preply have their fee cut to 18%.

  • Algorithm dependence. A search algorithm picks the tutor profiles students see. Regular updates and abiding by policies keep your profile visible. High ratings, promptness, and few cancellations give profiles search priority.

Best for: Entrepreneurial tutors willing to market themselves; building tutor experience

Glassdoor platform screenshot of Skooli

Working for Skooli: 3/5 ⭐ Glassdoor Skooli Tutor Reviews

Overview: Canadian tutor platform Skooli wants to connect professional teachers looking for extra cash with students who need help in subjects from math to language. Tutors wait for students to request a session, and students either schedule time with a specific tutor or send general help requests.

Pay: $25/hour (Canadian dollars, so US $18.44/hour), according to reviews.

Qualifications: Skooli tailors their requirements to attract experienced teachers. Tutors need either a bachelor’s degree in a field related to their subject, a state or provincial teaching license, or a specialized instructor qualification for their field (like an ESL certification).

How to apply to Skooli:

  • Sign up on the Skooli tutor registration page
  • Provide a government-issued photo ID, a degree or college transcripts (in English), copies of your teaching license (if applicable), and a criminal background check
  • Complete your tutor profile with your preferred grade levels, subjects, and languages
  • You will receive an email within a few days to arrange a video interview, which is the final step in application approval
Pros
  • Flexible hours. Tutors set their availability and are paid by the minute in a session. Tutors can accept or reject requests.

  • (Some) paid wait time for scheduled sessions. If a scheduled student no-shows, you’re paid for 15 minutes of wait time.

  • Custom session length. Students can request 15 minutes or several hours. Tutors with regular students have high earning potential and freedom to coordinate their ideal session length.

  • Native speaker not required. If you’re a language tutor (a popular Skooli subject), you aren’t required to be a native speaker of the language(s) you tutor.

  • Difficulty getting students. Tutor reviews repeatedly mention a low number of students and the need for more marketing.

  • Lack of tutor-student communication. Tutors can’t reach out to talk with students before their first lesson, so proactivity in getting new students is difficult.

  • Custom session length. Tutors who haven’t built up a student base may have trouble earning much on a handful of quick, one-time lessons.

  • The platform sets your price, and pay is in Canadian dollars (so pay may be less for you than the number in their advertisements).

  • Professional teachers only. Skooli isn’t the place for new tutors looking for experience. Qualification requirements are high.

Best for: Experienced tutors; side gig for teachers

Indeed platform screenshot of VIPkid

Working for VIPTeacher: 3.8/5 ⭐ Indeed VIPTeacher Tutor Reviews

Overview: VIPKid, the highly popular Chinese tutoring platform for K–12 English-language learning, changed its name and focus when China imposed restrictions for live private tutoring in late 2021. VIPKid (now VIPKid Global and VIPTeacher) is hiring American and Canadian ESL-certified tutors in 2025.

Pay: Roughly $14 to $16/hour starting pay, with pay incentives for more sessions.

Qualifications: Tutors must be American or Canadian native English speakers with a bachelor’s degree and a teaching or ESL certification (TESOL or TEFL accepted). You need a K–12 education background in the U.S. or Canada.

How to apply to VIPTeacher/VIPKid:

  • You can apply through the VIPTeacher login page by creating a new account.
  • Set up your profile and provide details of your education, work experience, certifications, and ability to work in the U.S. or Canada.
  • Review the demo session guidelines emailed to you and complete a mock session.
  • Browse the VIPTeacher job boards and apply to tutoring jobs that fit your experience, schedule, and pay requirements.
Pros
  • Low prep, as lesson plans, curriculum, and teaching materials are provided.

  • Pay incentives can increase your rate if you have the schedule flexibility to tutor often.

  • VIPTeacher workshops and courses level up your tutoring skills.

  • Flexible scheduling with no minimum hour commitment.

  • Must be a U.S. or Canadian citizen and a native English speaker.

  • Fixed starting pay that’s relatively low for the industry.

  • Late and early hours to accommodate International students.

  • Bookings can be hard to make, as availability of jobs varies.

Best for: Experienced language tutors with a teaching background; side gig for teachers

Indeed platform screenshot of Varsity Tutors

Working for Varsity Tutors: 3.5/5 ⭐ Indeed Varsity Tutors Reviews

Overview: Varsity Tutors is a large, popular tutoring platform that offers kindergarten through college tutoring in over 3,000 subjects. It’s particularly popular for test prep. Well-established with over 15 years of experience, the platform also serves over 1,000 schools and districts through the Varsity Tutors for Schools program.

Pay: Starts at $15 to $18/hour for 1:1 sessions, with incentives and higher rates for group classes.

Qualifications: High school diploma or GED required. Potential tutors must pass a background check and online interview, though no teaching experience or certifications are required. Tutors must be from the U.S. or Canada, but those who live in AK, CA, CO, DE, HI, ME, NH, ND, VT, WV, and Puerto Rico aren’t eligible to apply due to independent contractor laws.

How to apply to Varsity Tutors:

  • Go to the Varsity Tutors Application.
  • Fill in the application with your contact info, educational background, and any work experience documentation. (The application usually takes 30-45 minutes.)
  • Complete a video interview. You’ll be contacted before and after the interview if you’re accepted to move forward.
Pros
  • Flexibility to customize lessons to student needs and your teaching strengths.

  • Many ways to tutor. 1:1 sessions and group classes are available. Tutors can also pick up instant requests or schedule sessions.

  • Pay twice weekly through direct deposit or PayPal for minimal hassle.

  • Student-matching algorithm. Tutors report few problems getting enough sessions booked to fill their schedule.

  • Low barrier to entry for new tutors.

  • Does not provide curricula or lesson plans, unlike most platforms.

  • Student ratings greatly impact earning potential without much recourse for tutors, according to several reviews.

  • Low pay compared to similar platforms.

  • Reviews report frequent tech issues and trouble with IT support.

  • Little support with learning the system or getting started.

Best for: Tutors who prefer not to market themselves; new tutors; side gig

Glassdoor platform screenshot of Pear Deck Tutor

Working for Pear Deck Tutor: 3.6/5 ⭐ Glassdoor Pear Deck Tutor Reviews

Overview: Interactive Edtech developer Pear Deck Learning acquired and rebranded the popular tutoring platform TutorMe in January 2024. Now Pear Deck Tutor, the platform offers live remote academic support and employs over 2,500 tutors. Tutors can log in 24/7 and accept 1:1 tutoring sessions on demand.

Pro Tip: Pear Deck Tutor mostly made 2025 lists based on the strength of TutorMe and the promise of coordinating learning plans between teachers and tutors. Since it’s too early to tell whether the platform will thrive, tutors should keep an eye on Pear Deck.

Pay: Pear Deck tutor pay is $16/hour for session time spent with students.

Requirements: Tutors must either have a bachelor’s degree or be currently pursuing one, live in the U.S., and have previous experience working with students.

How to apply to Pear Deck Tutor:

  • Check the Pear Deck Tutor job board for openings.
  • Fill out your application with basic personal information, including your educational background and work experience.
  • Select your subjects and primary subject, and submit a knowledge assessment or one-way video interview. Tutors who pass will be accepted.
Pros
  • Weekly pay through a secure portal.

  • User-friendly platform. Pear Deck Learning is an edtech company, so the interface is top-notch. The award-winning Lesson Space features 1:1 video, draw-on whiteboards, graphic calculators, and more.

  • Connection to school admin. Students’ school admin can view their Pear Deck tutoring sessions, opening the door for collaboration, coordinated learning, and recommendations from teachers.

  • Flexible schedule. Tutors set their own schedules and accept live requests anytime.

  • New management and lack of available information. There’s not a lot of detailed tutor reviews for Pear Deck right now, which may suggest growing pains or low enrollment.

  • Low pay for a high level of experience. Tutors receive the same flat-rate pay regardless of experience, at a relatively low rate for the industry.

  • Student reviews and quality control. Pear Deck Tutor reviews mention that student ratings and subjective feedback can disproportionately affect tutor job security.

  • Inconsistent work. Students choose tutors “first come, first served”, so income varies.

Best for: Early-career tutors with some experience; side gig for teachers

Indeed platform screenshot of Tutor.com

Working for Tutor.com: 3.2/5 ⭐ Indeed Tutor.com Tutor Reviews

Overview: Tutor.com has brought students and tutors together for over two decades. It provides one-on-one tutoring and homework help in 250+ subjects for elementary through college learners. One of the most established tutor platforms, Tutor.com has connections to the Princeton Review (of SAT fame), corporate training programs, and more.

Pay: Average pay is $23.83, though Indeed reports as low as $7.23 and as high as $50.35.

Qualifications: Online tutors need at least a GED or high school diploma to apply, and you also need to pass a competency exam for your subject area, pass a background check, meet minimum system requirements, and show proof you can work in the U.S. You must either have a four-year college degree or be (at minimum) an enrolled college sophomore pursuing one.

How to apply to Tutor.com:

  • Visit the Tutor.com application page.
  • Create your account and fill out the application questions.
  • Pick your subjects and take the timed proficiency exam.
  • Complete an interview with a Tutor.com facilitator in the platform’s classroom software.
  • Once you’re accepted, the team will process your setup paperwork.

A pro tip from the blog author (a former Tutor.com tutor): Tutor.com has lots of onboarding support, so you’ll know how the system works before you jump in. The interface felt dated when I was there years ago (and it looks like not much has changed), but the availability of resources makes Tutor.com a good choice for less tech-savvy tutors.

Pros
  • Paid waiting time during scheduled hours. If you show up for your on-demand hours and no students sign on, you still get paid your state’s minimum wage.

  • Over 250 tutoring subjects. Many tutors sign up for multiple subjects to book the highest-paying lessons they can qualify for.

  • Elementary to adult students offer variety.

  • On-demand tutoring. Sign on as a floating tutor and pick up requests in real time, or reserve shift hours for priority matching.

  • Asynchronous tutoring. Tutors can also accept live video sessions or asynchronous sessions (for proofreading and review).

  • Direct student appointment requests. Schedule availability for requests from students you’ve worked with before to cultivate recurring sessions.

  • Mystery commission fee. Tutor.com doesn’t release how much of a cut they take from tutors’ salaries.

  • Pay varies by subject, tutor status (experience), and location. Tutors do not set their own rates.

  • Proficiency tests for each subject. This ensures quality but also adds complexity to the application process.

  • Must hit a minimum of 5 hours a week to stay in good standing.

  • Limited or no prep time for on-demand. Homework help sessions are more conversational and less structured.

  • Strict monitoring. Tutor.com records and reviews your sessions (kind of like a class observation for teachers) to ensure educational consistency and penalizes helping too much or taking too much time.

Best for: College students and early-career tutors; less tech-savvy tutors

Indeed platform screenshot of Italki

Working for italki: 4.3/5 ⭐ Indeed italki Tutor Reviews

Overview: One of the most popular language-learning tutor marketplaces in 2025, italki offers over 130 languages and lets students choose tutors based on pricing, profile, and reviews. italki emphasises conversational language with casual, practical sessions and more formal lessons.

Pay: From $4 to $80+/hour. italki tutors set their own rates, so prices vary by experience, credentials, and class type.

Qualifications: italki hires “professional teachers” (with teaching certificates) and “community tutors” (no teaching experience required).

  • Professional teachers must have a language teaching certification, university degree in language teaching, teaching license, or proof of employment at a language teaching institution.
  • Community tutors just need to be 18+ years old and a native speaker or fluent in their tutoring language.

How to apply to italki:

  • Visit the italki application page.
  • Check which languages are currently open for application. (This system is much more streamlined and transparent than the other language tutoring companies we reviewed.)
  • Decide whether you want to apply as a professional teacher or community tutor.
  • Prepare a video introduction.
  • Upload your language teaching certification, teaching license, or degree documentation.
Pros
  • Experience rewarded but not required. italki hires both credentialled teachers and native/fluent speakers with no teaching experience, but assigns them different roles.

  • 1:1 and group classes with a large pool of international students.

  • Tutors set their own prices. Experienced or credentialed teachers can charge more.

  • Handles international payments securely for you.

  • Flexible scheduling and teaching. Tutors create their own lesson plans, set their own hours, and work from anywhere with an internet connection.

  • Difficult to build a client base. Like most marketplaces where students find you, it’s hard to build regular students until you have a few reviews.

  • 15-30% commission fee, depending on lesson type.

  • Highly competitive. You’ll need to devote time and effort to your profile and doing free/reduced-cost demos to attract students.

  • Payment is slow. Money transfers happen twice a month unless you pay a $10 fee.

  • Pressure to lower prices to compete. Many reviewers are dissatisfied with how profiles are promoted to students and feel the need to lower their rates to get booked.

Best for: Freedom with lesson planning; entrepreneurial tutors willing to market themselves

Indeed platform screenshot of Outschool

Working for Outschool: 4.1/5 ⭐ Indeed Outschool Tutor Reviews

Overview: Popular with American homeschool students, Outschool is a tutoring marketplace with over 1.5 million students. Tutors can design and teach a wide range of live core academics and enrichment classes while setting their own prices and schedule. The marketplace rewards highly creative, niche courses and fun, inclusive learning.

Pay: Outschool suggests charging $22.50 to $24/hour per student for courses and $65 to $70/hour for core academic 1:1 tutoring.

Qualifications: No formal teaching degree or experience required — the emphasis is on what you know and whether you can make it engaging. (For example, a highly popular class features a former Disney Imagineer teaching engineering concepts to kids.) Tutors must reside full-time in the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, or the UK.

How to apply to Outschool:

  • Visit the Sign up to teach page.
  • Fill out your tutor bio.
  • Record an introductory video.
  • Submit a background check.
  • Approval usually happens within a few weeks.
Pros
  • Outschool promotes your classes via Facebook and Instagram ads.

  • Freedom to tailor classes to student needs and your interests. Successful Outschool classes fill a unique learning niche, so they reward creativity and experimentation.
  • You set class size, schedule, and pricing. Tutors can do 1:1 tutoring, semester classes, one-time or short-term classes, self-paced classes, and more.
  • Simple application you can complete in a few hours.
  • Diverse topics with an emphasis on fun. Many homeschool parents use Outschool as educational socialization for their kids, so gamified learning classes are popular.
  • You still need to market your own classes. As the platform becomes saturated, getting bookings can be tough. Promote classes on social media and to friends and family to boost enrollment.

  • No lessons or curricula provided. You’ll sink or swim based on how well you understand student needs and interests (and how you market your classes in video intros).

  • Inconsistent, seasonal demand and growing competition. Classes can take off or get 0 signups, and it’s hard to know what will grab students’ attention.

  • 30% commission fee.

  • Customer service problems. Many tutor and parent reviews in the last year mention payment account issues and having trouble getting back money.

Best for: Experienced teachers; client-building; unique enrichment classes

Indeed platform screenshot of Cambly

10. Cambly

Working for Cambly: 3.3/5 ⭐ Indeed Cambly Tutor Reviews

Overview: Cambly is a conversation-based, English-language tutoring platform for international learners. Tutors can offer 1:1 private tutoring and group lessons, as well as lessons specifically for kids. While Cambly sets standard rates, tutors can set their schedule and accept as little or as much work as they want.

Pay: Cambly tutors earn $10.20/hour on Cambly and $12/hour on Cambly Kids.

Qualifications: No teaching degree, teaching certification, or tutor experience required. Tutors must be native English speakers, at least 18 years old, and have access to a strong internet connection.

How to apply to Cambly:

  • Click Get Started on Cambly’s tutor page to sign up for an account.
  • Complete a short application (10-15 minutes).
  • The Cambly team will review your application and notify you via email.
Pros
  • Flexible scheduling. Tutors can set their own hours 24/7 and accept whichever sessions they choose.

  • Conversation-focused, low-prep lessons.

  • Cambly provides prompts, curricula, and discussion questions to help new tutors.

  • Low barriers to entry. This is an easy, low-stress platform to build experience and gain regular students. Cambly is also open to tutors from any country.

  • Weekly pay through direct deposit.

  • Tutors who don’t commit to Priority Hours won’t get much work. Forums mention that Cambly policy changes like Priority Hours make finding students more difficult.

  • Low pay. Pay rates haven’t gone up in five years. There is no potential to earn higher rates over time or with experience.

  • Nearing saturation. At the time of publication, Cambly was temporarily limiting the number of new tutors accepted to protect current tutors’ hours.

  • Paid a fraction of your rate for no-show students.

  • Free 15-minute demos can attract time-wasting students or offensive behavior.

Best for: New tutors who want to gain experience; side gig

Final Tips: What Do I Need to Know Before Tutoring Online?

Now that you know the best online tutor jobs, let’s talk pro tips. While reading online tutor reviews, I came across so many “things I wish I knew before tutoring” that matched my experience.

From me (and many other tutors) to you, here are essential things to know before you sign up:

Company policies change all the time.

Tutoring platforms and marketplaces typically hire you as an independent contractor, not an employee. That means companies have fewer restrictions about changes to your pay, working conditions, incentives, or other policies that dictate how you work.

Many tutoring companies market themselves as a side hustle for teachers rather than an alternative career, but others aren’t quite as upfront. One of the most common struggles online tutors face is earning enough to support themselves on one platform.

As an independent contractor, you’re usually free to contract with multiple companies to increase your job stability, get extra hours, and meet more students. If you’re a new-ish tutor, leverage your experience at one company when you apply somewhere new.

Establishing regular students, especially on tutor marketplaces, may require giving demo lessons and experimenting with your profile. Waiting a month or more to start seeing consistent bookings is typical, so plan for other sources of income when you’re starting out.

Tutors regularly report less tech problems, and therefore less interruptions to learning, when they use a good quality, external webcam and mic rather than the ones built into their laptop.

Reliable internet is crucial for online tutoring, so if you live in an area with spotty wifi, it helps to have an internet backup plan.

Tutoring is mentally and emotionally difficult. One of the benefits of flexible online tutoring jobs is the ability to dial back your availability. Some students may not return if you reduce hours, but tutoring relationships tend to be seasonal regardless. Protect your love of teaching by resting and recharging.

Feeling disconnected from the support of other teachers is a common struggle for online tutors. Search your company on your favorite social media platform (or just #online tutor) to connect with other tutors and share tips and stories.

Platforms don’t have to be the end goal: you can gain experience for your own tutoring business. Invest in the process and gather feedback to learn digital marketing, lesson planning for different learners, schedule management, and setting rates — all core skills for getting your own online tutoring jobs from home.

Two Big Things Most New Tutors Don’t Know (But Should)

All of the online tutoring jobs we mentioned hire you as an independent contractor. That means you are technically self-employed. Based on this structure, you need to consider two important things:

  1. You owe some taxes. As a 1099 worker (aka, an independent contractor), you pay taxes on your online tutoring income. Set aside a fund for tax season with 15.3% of your earnings if you plan to make more than $400 that year from online tutoring. Here’s a tutor 1099 income tax calculator to help.
  2. Your tutoring company does not protect you from the risks of tutoring. Most tutors buy their own health insurance but don’t realize their professional services aren’t covered, either. You face the same risk of dissatisfied parents, lawsuits, accidents, and allegations as a learning center owner or traditional teacher — but 100% on your own.

Tutor insurance is a smart option for protecting yourself against the cost of getting sued, replacing broken or stolen tech, and much more.

How to Find the Best Online Tutor Jobs: FAQs

How Much Do the Best Online Tutoring Jobs Pay?

According to Zippia, the average yearly salary for an online tutor ranges from $24,000 to $39,000. Hourly, the average is $14.85. Pay varies by the tutor’s experience and credentials. Some platforms have higher than average base rates, but keep in mind that most tutors don’t work full-time hours.

Outschool is one of the best online tutor jobs for pay potential. It has the highest self-reported average pay at $50/hour, though Indeed reviews suggest $27.39/hour is more common. Outschool tutors say earning potential was highest several years ago (some reported making $100+/hour), but platform saturation means tutors tend to make less in 2025.

Online tutor pay rates change constantly and vary widely between tutors, so do your research when considering online tutoring companies hiring for your subject. Other high-paying online tutoring companies include:

Tutor certification requirements vary by platform, but a few qualifications are always welcome. The least-demanding platforms ask for a GED or high school diploma and proof of knowledge in your subject. The most demanding may require a college degree in teaching or your field, a teaching certificate, a subject-matter certificate, and tutoring experience.

Notes on ranking:

  • When a tutoring company included its own platform or an affiliated platform as a top pick, we eliminated the reviewer’s platform from our mentions tally to avoid bias.
  • Khan Academy and Chegg were eliminated when they appeared on the above lists, as they do not directly hire tutors to connect them with students (or no longer provide that service at time of writing). However, experienced educators may apply to develop curricula, and tutors often use these resources as lesson support materials.
