What Is Teacher Liability Insurance?
Liability insurance for teachers is a type of educator insurance designed to cover third-party bodily injury and property damage claims for public and private school teachers, 1099 employees, and substitute teachers.
Insurance Canopy’s base teacher insurance policy includes a variety of coverage types, from general liability to professional liability insurance (aka errors and omissions) to provide you with a comprehensive financial shield against costly claims.
Which Teachers Need Insurance?
A wide variety of teachers need insurance, including:
- Public school teachers
- Private school teachers
- Homeschool teachers
- Online teachers
- Student teachers
- Teachers who provide tutoring services
Why Do Teachers Need Insurance?
Accidents happen, and those accidents can lead to expensive lawsuits. For example, a student’s parents could accuse you of failing to properly prepare them for an important test, resulting in bad grades and a rejection from their college of choice.
With teacher insurance, you could get financial support to pay for attorney’s fees, settlement costs, and other expenses associated with this claim instead of paying entirely out of pocket.
How Much Is Teaching Insurance?
You can get teacher liability insurance from Insurance Canopy starting at just $21.08 per month or $229 per year. This cost can be affected by which state you teach in or if you add any additional coverages to your policy during checkout, such as equipment and materials insurance or cyber liability.
Insurance isn’t just another expense — it’s a safety net to fall back on. When you consider how claims can easily cost you thousands of dollars to settle, the choice is clear: insurance is an important investment in your financial security and teaching career. Learn more about teacher insurance cost.
What Types of Insurance Do Teachers Need?
Teachers need a variety of insurance coverages to sufficiently shield themselves from claims, including:
- General Liability
- Professional Liability (aka Errors and Omissions)
- Products-Completed Operations
- Damage to Premises Rented to You
- Personal and Advertising Injury
All of these coverages are included with our base teaching insurance policy. However, you may find that you need additional coverage. Insurance Canopy makes it easy to customize your policy with add-ons like:
- Inland Marine (Equipment and Materials)
- Cyber Liability (Data Breach Insurance)
- Unlimited Additional Insureds
- Sexual Abuse and Molestation (SAM) Liability
- Workers Compensation
- Higher limits for General and Professional Liability ($1M per occurrence / $3M aggregate)
What’s Covered in Teacher Liability Insurance?
Insurance Canopy offers the following coverages as part of a base teacher insurance policy or as add-ons you can include during checkout.
General Liability Coverage
General liability insurance, sometimes called “slip-and-fall insurance”, responds to third-party bodily injury and property damage claims.
If your student injures themselves during one of your classroom activities, their parents could sue you for negligence.
With general liability insurance, you could receive financial support to pay for some or all of this claim.
Professional Liability Coverage (aka Errors and Omissions)
Professional liability insurance for teachers can protect you from the cost of a lawsuit over bad or faulty instruction you gave one of your students.
For example, if a student’s parents sue you and claim that you didn’t adequately prepare their child for an AP test, this insurance could help mitigate (or eliminate) the associated costs.
Products-Completed Operations Coverage
This coverage responds to bodily injury and property damage claims that happen away from your premises and occur as a result of your teaching instruction or services.
Picture this: you send your students home with instructions to create a science experiment as part of their homework. One student gets injured after following your instructions, and their parents sue you. Products-completed operations coverage could respond to this claim.
Cyber Liability Coverage (Optional)
Cyber crimes and data breaches are unfortunately becoming more and more frequent and can happen to any business.
A hacker could steal sensitive data from your computer or smartphone like client names, contact or payment info, birth dates, etc. Or you might unknowingly click on something, allowing malware to be installed on your machine.
Cyber liability coverage can cover attorney fees, the costs of resolving disputes with clients, data recovery fees, and more.
Damage to Premises Rented to You
This coverage shields you from the cost of damages that may occur during the first seven (7) days of renting a space to tutor or teach out of, including:
- Scraping the floors while you were rearranging desks for your students
- Accidentally denting the classroom door while you were moving your equipment inside
After those first 7 days, this coverage applies to damages you caused by accidentally starting a fire on the premises. For other damages to your rented space that weren’t caused by a fire, your general liability insurance could cover the cost.
Personal and Advertising Injury
Not every work experience is great, so if you have a terrible experience working for one school and post about it online, the school could attempt to sue you for defamation.
Personal and advertising injury coverage could pay for associated legal fees, such as the cost of hiring an attorney or settlement expenses.
Equipment and Materials Coverage (Inland Marine)
If you use your own equipment when you teach, such as tablets, computers, or other educational materials, there’s always a risk they’ll be damaged or stolen. The cost of repairing or replacing this gear can be very expensive.
Equipment and materials coverage (known as “Inland Marine”) is an optional add-on from Insurance Canopy designed to protect you from shouldering the cost of fixing or replacing your gear out of pocket.
Additional Insureds
An additional insured is a person or organization that your policy doesn’t automatically cover, but you may add them at their request. This could be the public school that hires you as a long-term substitute teacher, for example.
With Insurance Canopy, you can add an unlimited number of additional insureds to your policy at no extra cost. You’ll have the option to add them during the checkout process or at any time afterward by logging in to your user dashboard.
Sexual Abuse & Molestation (SAM) Liability Coverage
You work hard to maintain a professional boundary with students while caring about them as people, but even kindly intentioned concern and encouragement can be misinterpreted.
If you face a false allegation, the last thing you should have to worry about is how you’re going to pay for your defense. SAM liability insurance helps cover costs like attorney fees if you are wrongfully accused of sexual harassment or other misconduct.
Workers Compensation
If you have one employee or more (including part-timers, seasonal help, and interns), most states require you to have workers comp insurance. This covers expenses like medical bills, lost wages, and funeral costs if an employee gets injured or sick due to work.
Insurance Canopy offers comprehensive workers comp coverage to keep your business compliant and your employees protected.
Insurance Can Save You Thousands
Not all mistakes can be erased. When an accident happens and you’re held responsible for it, teaching insurance acts as a financial safeguard to save you from the out-of-pocket costs of claims like these.
Teacher sued for negligence after a student was injured during a classroom experiment. $200,000
Landlord sued a teacher for causing a fire in a rented after-school tutoring space. $75,000
Colleague accused a teacher of defamation for making false statements about them in a public forum. $100,000

Have Questions About Teaching Insurance? We’re On It.
If the School I Work for Has Liability Insurance, Do I Still Need a Policy?
Yes! Your school’s liability policy will only cover them for mistakes they make — not mistakes you’re held personally responsible for.
Let’s say a student’s parents claim that your poor instruction is to blame for their child’s bad grades and they sue you and the school. Your school’s insurance policy may only shield them from the financial burden of that claim, whereas you may be left to pay for your own defense costs out of pocket.
Can Teachers Be Sued for Incidents That Occur at School?
Yes, they can. Teachers can be held legally liable for a variety of incidents, such as negligence that led to a student’s injury or for failing to provide adequate instruction to a student.
Why Do Private Teachers Need Liability Insurance?
Private teachers or tutors are particularly vulnerable to liability claims because — unlike teachers who work at a public or private school — they don’t receive any coverage under a school’s policy. That means any accidents they cause or lawsuits they’re named in fall solely on their shoulders, rather than their employer being named as well.
Do Homeschool Teachers Need Liability Insurance?
Yes, homeschool teachers need liability insurance! Many of the risks teachers face in a public or private school environment are also present in homeschool instruction, such as students getting injured on your watch.
Additionally, most homeowners insurance policies won’t cover claims for injuries or property damage that occur during a homeschool session, as these activities are considered business activities.
What Kind of Insurance Do Online Teachers Need?
Two of the most important types of coverage for online teachers are professional liability (for claims involving your instruction) and cyber liability (to cover costs associated with data breaches and hacking).
Online teachers who rent a separate space to teach from may also benefit from general liability and damage to premises rented to you coverage in case of any accidental property damage.
Do Substitute or Student Teachers Need Liability Insurance?
Yes. While your school or district’s policy may offer limited coverage, it often only covers you if the district is named in a lawsuit. If the lawsuit is filed against you personally, you may not receive any coverage unless you have your own liability insurance policy.
All substitutes and student teachers should have general liability and professional liability coverage at a minimum in case they are held responsible for any injuries, property damage, or allegations involving their instruction.
Am I Covered By My School, Co-Op, or Placement (or Do I Need My Own Policy)?
A school or other organization may offer limited coverage for you under their own liability insurance policy, but it’s designed to protect them first and foremost.
Teachers need personal liability insurance because these other policies typically will not cover them for incidents that happen outside the scope of their role. This includes after-school tutoring, off-campus activities, and allegations.
What Kind of Insurance Do Music Teachers Need?
Typically, music teachers need the following types of coverage:
- General liability
- Professional liability
- Products-completed operations
- Damage to premises rented to you
- Personal and advertising injury
However, some music teachers may need additional coverage to properly protect themselves against the risks they face. This includes cyber liability and equipment and instrument coverage.
Learn more about music teacher insurance from Insurance Canopy.
